CALL for photographers and
artists
Photographic centre Nykyaika will hold its triennial international photography event.
We invite photographers and media-artists from all over the world to start a visual and OPEN-MINDED dialogue on views and visions of contemporary life. We will exhibit the contributions during the whole of 2002. Expected Materials: Contributions can be in any form of photography, but we also ask for video images, installations and computer-based-visual-arrangements. World is facing strong and powerful movements towards centralisation of economy and politics. People are willing to sacrifice symbols of national identity just to join the global party. At the same time national identities are aroused by threats and acts of terror. Intercultural communication is swiftly exchanged for double-tongued cultural monologues. Media are involved in these processes, are part of them. How will outsiders, youth and those on the periphery participate in or react to these movements and what are the main concerns and opportunities for those out there ? Is there a place for ART in all this ? Are notions of TRUTH revoked ? Is the IMAGE itself transformed ?
We are facing a situation, where beliefs require instant re-evaluation, where contracts are torn, where being critical threatens to become being hypo-critical. Nature, image, nation, truth are struck down by their own distorted doubles. Fear seeps in and institutes its own regime.
Backlight is a photographical term but also an emblem for the main idea of our event: Backlight underexposes the usual subjects. Backlight exposes unexpected subjects. is the title and concept of the event and the award. |
BACKLIGHT wants to focus
on:
Periphery and regions avantgarde and underground, and their challengers European artists, their experiences and visions open minded minorities, their colours and cultures migration and inspiration fear and joy, if any investigation of media hypocrisy youngsters social reality and creativity in the backlight of fashion and personality design non-christian culture and identity in Europe ecology and pollution control in the backlight of the global economy and competition a second look at nature, at risk and under attack Faith has become bad faith, nature has become DOUBLE nature. Images are made now more than ever in a perspectiveless space. A space of tactile confusion surrounds us. World events have torn and scratched our disks. When the lights fade in not only is the image gone; there no longer is a screen. |
