SEEUROPEANS

“Seeuropeans is a portrait gallery of Europeans on the beach. This restricted space running between land and sea comprises unique features, just as the ways of frequenting it are unique.

One goes there to relax and rest usually during the holidays or – as it may happen near a big city – for a pause during the working day. Here, lazily lying under the shining sun, time runs slower and people try to be what they are not during everyday life.

While portraying people we noticed the many differences between the northern European beaches and the southern ones; differences due to the climate and the characteristics of the place, but what is more important, we become aware of the fact that the persons portrayed were capable of expressing quite vividly the peculiarities of the society to which they belonged.”

The images were recorded with a 10x12 plate camera during four different summers on nine European beaches; Rimini in Italy and Brighton in England (1994) , Tylosand in Sweden and Nice in France (1999), Romania (2000), Ibiza, Helsinki and Jurmala beach in Latvia (2001). The work was awarded first prize for “a photographic project 2000” by the Studio Marangoni Foundation in Florence.

”Seeuropeans on kuvagalleria eurooppalaisista rannalla. Maan ja meren välinen rajallinen tila on monin tavoin ainutlaatuinen, kuten myös tavat oleskella siellä. Rannalle mennään rentoutumaan ja lepäilemään tavallisesti lomilla – tai, kuten suurkaupungissa voi käydä, viettämään lepohetkeä työpäivän lomassa. Siellä auringossa raukeana makoillessa aika hidastuu ja ihmiset koettavat olla jotain mitä he eivät jokapäiväisessä elämässään ole.

Kuvatessamme ihmisiä huomasimme monia eroja pohjois- ja eteläeurooppalaisilla rannoilla; sekä ilmastosta että fyysisestä ympäristöstä johtuvia, mutta ennen kaikkia aloimme tiedostaa kuvaamiemme ihmisten kykyä ilmaista erittäin värikkäästi edustamiensa yhteiskuntien erityispiirteitä.”

Kuvat on otettu 10 x 12 paljekameralla neljän eri kesän aikana yhdeksällä eurooppalaisella rannalla; Riminissä Italiassa ja Brightonissa Englannissa (1994), Tylosandissa Ruotsissa ja Nizzassa Ranskassa (1999), Romaniassa (2000), Ibizalla, Helsingissä ja Jurmalassa Latviassa (2001). Studio Marangoni – säätiö Firenzessä on antanut työlle ensimmäisen palkinnon ”parhaana valokuvaprojektina 2000”.
