STILL LIFE TAKE AWAY, internet project

ÆNet Art“, as opposed to Æart on the Net“, is characterised by the fact that it exists primarily in th virtual space of the Internet, using the Internet both as raw material and a platform for artistic discussion and presentation. Thus, in this context, the Internet is not only a venue of art but also its medium.

As an Internet user, you can have your own individual work of art created as a “Still Life Take Away” at an Internet address http://xcult.ch/atelier/atelier2/stuvdb/verteil.html

You select the desired elements from the objects pictured on the web site. A few days later you receive your digital image created by Studer/van den Berg as an 84x84 cm ink jet print by post. You pay only the price of the pictured objects and a flat rate for printing and postage.

The conceptual work by the Studer/van den Berg duo is distinguished by two crucial characteristics of Net art. By including the observer – in this case the client – as a ‘co-creator’, the artists use the Internet as an interactive communication medium, there by establishing a new definition of the interaction between the artist, the work of art and the observer. Furthermore, the creative process of the print complies with the principle of non-linearity which is so significant for the World Wide Web.

The emptiness of the still lifes in terms of content, and the corresponding banalisation of the image, refer to their “place of birth” – the Net. The transformation of the virtual images into tangible and intentionally inferior prints emphasises the dependence of the material still life on parts of the virtual artistic whole. At the same time, this transformation emphasises the constantly experienced overlapping an interpenetration of virtuality and reality, thus establishing an interface between two thoroughly disparate realities.

”Nettitaide”, päinvastoin kuin ”taide netissä” määrittyy sillä, että se on pääasiassa olemassa vain Internetin virtuaalitilassa, käyttäen Internetiä sekä raaka-aineena että foorumina, jossa voi esittää taidetta ja keskustella siitä. Näin Internet ei ole vain taiteen esityspaikka, vaan myös sen tekoväline.

Haluamansa elementit voi valita nettisivuilla esitellyistä kohteista. Muutamaa päivää myöhemmin Studerin ja van den Bergin luoma 84X84 cm kokoinen digitaalinen mustesuihkujäljennös sitten saapuu kotiin postissa. Vain kuvattaviksi valitut kohteet sekä vakiotaksainen painotyö ja postitus) maksavat. Studerin ja van den Bergin käsitetaiteelle on tunnusomaista kaksi nettitaiteen olennaista ominaispiirrettä. Ottamalla katsojan – tässä tapauksessa asiakkaan – mukaan ”kanssataiteilijaksi” taiteenluojat käyttävät Internetiä interaktiivisena kommunikaatiovälineenä, näin luoden uuden määritelmän taiteilijan, taideteoksen ja katsojan kanssakäymiselle. Lisäksi vedoksen luomisprosessi on yhdenmukainen World Wide Webille ominaisen epälineaarisuuden periaatteen kanssa.

Asetelmien sisällön tyhjyys, ja vastaava kuvan arkipäiväistyminen, viittaa niiden ”syntypaikkaan”, Internetiin. Virtuaalikuvien muuttuminen käsin kosketeltaviksi ja tarkoituksellisesti huonolaatuisiksi vedoksiksi korostaa aineellisten asetelmien riippuvuutta osasta virtuaalista taiteellista kokonaisuutta. Samalla tämä muutos tähdentää virtuaalisuuden ja todellisuuden jatkuvaa limittäin menoa ja toisiinsa tunkeutumista, luoden näin kohtaamisalueen kahdelle täysin eriluonteiselle todellisuudelle.
