WAKING UP STORIES

The series of photographs, ”Waking up stories”, was born during the period when I lived in Glasgow, Scotland, and then returned to Helsinki, Finland. During those three years I managed to live in eight different apartments. I met many people who lived in similar circumstances, passing wanderers, who lived for a couple months in one place, then moved on.

In ”Waking up stories” I slept one night in the same room with the person I photographed. In the morning, immediately after waking up, I took pictures of the room, the view from the window, and the person in whose company I had slept. Every morning was the beginning of one story and the end of another one, and waking up was kind of returning from one’s travels. In the morning the body already goes through its routines but the mind still explores its nightly travels.

Valokuvasarja ”Waking up stories” syntyi aikana jolloin asuin Glasgowssa, Skotlannissa ja palatessani takasin Helsinkiin, Suomeen. Noitten kolmen vuoden aikana ehdin asua 8 eri asunnossa. Tapasin paljon ihmisiä, jotka olivat samassa tilanteessa kuin minä, väliaikaisia vaeltelijoita, jotka asuivat pari kuukautta yhdessä paikassa, ja jatkoivat sitten matkaansa.

Waking up storiesissa nukuin yhden yön kuvattavan henkilön kanssa samassa huoneessa. Aamulla heti heräämisen jälkeen kuvasin huonetta tai maisemaa ulos ikkunasta ja henkilöä jonka seurassa olin nukkunut. Jokainen aamu on yhden tarinan alku ja toisen loppu, herääminen on jonkinlaista matkalta palaamista. Aamulla ruumis suorittaa jo arjen rutiineja mutta mieli seikkailee vielä yöllisillä matkoillaan.
