CHUBS AND CHASERS

“I’ve always been attracted to overweight people. This might have to do with the fact that my granny, who raised me, is overweight, or maybe because I am large myself. During a search on the internet, I found a website with plump homosexual men and thought it to be quite interesting. I went through the whole site and followed the links that it contained, to find out that there was a whole subculture of big gay men and other men who were attracted to them. The big men are called chubs or chubbies and those who like them are called chasers. Chasers can be thin as well as large. I started contacting people and chatting with them on the internet and got to know quite a few of them pretty well. Then I read that in autumn 1998 there was a meeting of chubs and chasers in Brussels where I studied at that time. I decided to take part in that five-day-event and take pictures of those people. I had decided to explore that subculture and show that homosexual men are not always thin, effeminate, with a high pitched nasal voice and a defined body like the stereotype dictates it. "

Pullukat ja jahtaajat

”Ylipainoiset ihmiset ovat aina vetäneet minua puoleensa. Se voi johtua siitä, että mummoni, joka kasvatti minut, on ylipainoinen, tai siitä, että olen itse kookas. Löysin Internetistä sivuston pulleista homomiehistä ja pidin sitä varsin mielenkiintoisena. Kävin läpi sivuston ja seurasin sen sisältämiä linkkejä, ja tajusin että oli olemassa kokonainen alakulttuuri isokokoisille homomiehille ja heihin viehättyneille miehille. Isoja miehiä kutsutaan nimillä ”chub” tai ”chubby” (pullukka) ja heistä pitäviä nimellä ”chaser” (jahtaaja, perässäjuoksija). ”Chaserit” voivat olla joko laihoja tai lihavia. Aloin hakea yhteyttä ihmisiin ja chattailla heidän kanssaan netissä, ja opin tuntemaan joitakin heistä aika hyvin. Sitten luin että syksyllä 1998 Brysselissä, jossa opiskelin siihen aikaan, olisi ”chubien” ja ”chasereiden” kokoontuminen. Päätin osallistua tähän viisipäiväiseen tapahtumaan ja ottaa siellä ihmisistä kuvia. Olin päättänyt tutkia kyseistä alakulttuuria ja osoittaa, etteivät kaikki homomiehet ole laihoja, naisellisia ja korkealla nenä-äänellä puhuvia, eikä heillä aina ole sellaista selkeälihaksista vartaloa kuin stereotypia vaatisi."
