For the past sixteen years, Ruth Erdt has been photographing her environment, documenting randomly selected experts of her life and recording the feelings and perceptions that her friends and children have about life. Lie Nan Goldin’s work, her photographs show that, in view of today’s influx of pictures, authenticity can only b achieved when it is based on merciless - and self – addressed -biographic principles. Her use of camera perspective – top- or bottom-view close-ups, rarely frontal – conveys the direct, emotionally close contact between the photographer and her model. The camera (and with it the viewer) penetrates the intimate sphere of the subject, blurring the borders between intimate and public areas and revealing the frequently disregarded aspect of human vulnerability and uncertainty. Erdt stages the people and things around her from the first-person perspective, thus creating her own aesthetics and endeavouring to organise everyday life through the camera lens. “There is a kind of wisdom which exists before you are ready for it. This is inevitable.” Like this statement by Tom Waits, Ruth Erdt comes face to face with the rules and hidden laws of life by means of her visual diary – rules which cannot be invented, but only discovered.

True to the tradition of autobiographical photography, Ruth Erdt’s pictures are sharp and forthright, and imbued with a subtle eroticism. The – at least partial – nudity contained in many of the images corresponds with a reduction to essentials, to the purely individual and personal, and refers to the omnipresent search for identity.

Viimeisen kuudentoista vuoden ajan Ruth Erdt on kuvannut ympäristöään, dokumentoiden sattumalta valittuja pätkiä elämästään ja tallentaen ystäviensä ja lastensa tunteita ja havaintoja elämästä. Nan Goldinin töitten tavoin hänen kuvansa osoittavat että tämän päivän kuvatulvassa autenttisuus voidaan saavuttaa vain jos se perustuu säälimättömiin ja omaelämäkerrallisiin periaatteisiin. Erdtin kameraperspektiivi – ylhäältä tai alhaalta otetut lähikuvat, harvoin suoraan edestä otetut – välittää kuvaajan ja kohteitten suoran ja emotionaalisesti läheisen suhteen. Kamera (ja sen mukana katsoja) tunkeutuu kohteen yksityiseen elämänpiiriin, sekoittaen henkilökohtaisen ja julkisen tilan rajat ja paljastaen usein huomiotta jätetyn ihmiselämän haavoittuvaisen ja epävarman puolen. Erdt järjestää ympärillään olevat ihmiset ja esineet ensimmäisen persoonan perspektiivistä, luoden täten oman esteettisen maailmansa ja koettaen panna jokapäiväisen elämän järjestykseen kameransa linssin välityksellä. ”On olemassa viisautta joka on olemassa jo ennen kuin olet siihen valmis. Tämä on väistämätöntä.” Tämän Tom Waitsin lausuman tavoin Ruth Erdt kohtaa elämän säännöt ja kätketyt lait visuaalisen päiväkirjansa avulla – säännöt, joita ei voi keksiä, vain löytää. Omaelämäkerrallisen valokuvauksen perinteen mukaisesti Erdtin kuvat ovat teräviä, mutkattomia ja hienovaraisen erotiikan kyllästämiä. Monissa kuvissa esiintyvä ainakin osittainen alastomuus edustaa olennaiseen keskittymistä, henkilö- ja omakohtaisuutta, kaikkialla tapahtuvaa identiteetin etsintää.
