OF THE YET UNCOMPLETED WORK IN SUBURBIA My work is about suburbs. It´s a kind of living that I was once part of in the housing projects close to Helsinki. The suburbs were mostly build during the late 60´s and early 70´s. They were planned to serve people moving in from various parts of Finland in search of work and happy living in the areas of economical growth. The idyll soon turned into various housing projects for those who hadn´t made it temporarily or for good. It is in these kinds of places I spent my golden youth. Somewhere in the middle of the 90´s, after being already involved in photography, I became interested in that particular form of living I had always neglected. To me, suburbs represent the borders of functional Finnish society and I could never suggest anything else than a toast for them! Borders of our society are nothing but a reflection of what lies in the centre of it. |
