AUDIENCE

”People in front of the television, faces which are captivated, indifferent, perplexed, enraptured.

Hidden amidst these expressions, we attempt to observe moments of the communication – the most frequent, common and debated of all – between the TV and the viewers.

We’re dealing here with mass communication, supported by a medium which provides only one-way information to which, some believe, it is impossible for the recipient to respond and react, so that it fails to comply with one of the essential prerogatives of a definition of communication as “the sharing of concepts and meanings between two or more people”.

Through these photographs, however, what we discover is a mass which is at times active and capable of reacting to the inexhaustible flow of messages which reach us daily.

”Ihmisiä television edessä, lumoutuneita kasvoja, välinpitämättömiä, hämmentyneitä, haltioissaan.

Näiden ilmeitten seasta voimme koettaa löytää kommunikaation hetkiä – useimmiten, yleisimmin ja kiistellyimmin etsittyjä – nimittäin tv:n ja sen katsojien välillä.

Puhumme nyt massaviestinnästä, jota kannattelee yksisuuntainen tiedotusväline, johon jotkut uskovat olevan mahdotonta reagoida. Näin ollen televisio ei täytä kommunikaation määritelmää ”kahden tai useamman henkilön välisestä ajatusten ja merkitysten vaihdosta”.

Näissä valokuvissa kuitenkin näemme ihmisiä, jotka ajoittain ovat aktiivisia ja kykenevät vastaamaan päivittäin kohtaamaamme tiedotusvirtaan.
