HOCHLAND

Guido Baselgia was born (1953) and raised in the Engadine (canton of Graubunden). Living and working in Baar near the city of Zug since 1982, today he is one of Switzerland's topmost photographers. Increasingly, he finds himself straying from his background in documentary photographic essays to specialize in longer-term studies of people and their living places. Over the last three years, he has devoted himself to exploring the outreaches of the Engadine landscape and, by the same token, the boundaries of human civilization. Contrasting with most contemporary photography and the trend for staged settings, Baselgia's work highlights the immediacy of existing landscapes. The resulting black-and-white, large-format photographs, from which an album entitled "Hochland" (Highland) has been compiled, convey a fascinating and irritating image of a seemingly familiar region. They also represent a latter-day and highly idiosyncratic continuation of a long line of famous painters and photographers known to have focused on this world-renowned, high mountain valley of the Engadine. Not that the exact geographic location itself is of major importance, since, more generally speaking, Baselgia's photographs imply a search for traces and, as such, end up defying conventional notions of time and space.

Guido Baselgia syntyi (1953) ja kasvoi Engadinessa (Graubunden kantonissa). Hän asuu ja työskentelee Baarissa (lähellä Zugin kaupunkia), ja on nykyään yksi Sveitsin tärkeimmistä valokuvaajista. Yhä useammin hän etsiytyy pois juuriltaan, keskittyen pitkäaikaisiin projekteihin tutkiakseen ja kuvatakseen ihmisiä ja heidän ympäristöään. Viimeisten kolmen vuoden aikana hän on antautunut tutkimaan Engadinen reunamien maisemia ja samalla inhimillisen sivistyksen rajoja. Päinvastoin kuin suuri osa nykykuvauksesta jossa käytetään lavasteita, Baselgia korostaa jo olemassa olevien maisemien välittömyyttä. Tuloksena syntyneet suuret mustavalkeat kuvat, joista on myös koottu teos ”Hochland” (Ylämaa), ovat kiehtovia ja mieltä kaivertavia näkyjä pinnallisesti tutuista seuduista. Ne myöskin osaltaan jatkavat modernilla ja idiosynkraattisella tavalla pitkää perinnettä, jossa kuuluisat maalarit ja valokuvaajat ovat keskittyneet kuvamaan Engadinen maailmankuulua vuoristolaaksoa. Ei niin että alueen tarkka maantieteellinen sijainti olisi sinänsä tärkeä, koska laajemmin ottaen Baselgian valokuvat merkitsevät jälkien etsintää, ja siinä uhmaavat perinteisiä ajan ja tilan käsitteitä.
